Word to PDF
Word to PDF is the conversion people expect to be boring, and it does not require Adobe Acrobat. It still fails in two dishonest ways: a file that is not a PDF, and a PDF whose text layer does not contain the words you wrote. Papermeld will not treat either as done.
What this search is asking for
People search “word to pdf” or “convert to pdf without adobe” when a letter, a memo, or a report has to leave Word. The other person asked for a PDF. A portal will not take a .docx. Acrobat is not required for that export.
The useful result is a real PDF whose text is still text. You should be able to search for a sentence you wrote. You should be able to select it. A picture of the Word window, saved with a .pdf extension, is not that file.
Why a simple export still fails
The conversion has to open the Word file and write a PDF. If the writer is missing, or if it writes something that is not a PDF, the honest result is a failure, not a placeholder download.
The second failure is a PDF that no longer has your words. That happens when the body never made it into the export, or when the file was flattened to an image of the page. Looking the same in print preview is a weak test. Search for a word you typed. If it is not there, the PDF is a picture.
Papermeld does not bypass someone else’s restriction. If the Word file is locked against opening or export, the honest result may be that this copy cannot be converted. Ask for an unlocked source from the person who owns it.
What Papermeld actually produces

This is an export of the document you uploaded, not a redesign. Headers, unusual fonts, and floating objects can still shift. We do not claim a pixel-perfect match with the Word window, and we do not claim that every annotation became a searchable string.
What you should still review
Open the PDF. Search for a sentence you know is in the Word file. Check the page count against Word. Look at any table or letterhead you already know is delicate.
If you need the PDF to be searchable for a later conversion — Excel, PowerPoint, or Word again — confirm the text layer first. A PDF that is only a picture will fail those jobs for the same reason a scan does.
You remain responsible for the file you send.
