PDF to Word without text boxes
A Word file full of text boxes is the most common way a “successful” conversion still fails. The page looks like the PDF. You cannot edit it like a document.
What a text box is doing in the file
In Word, a text box is a floating container. It has a position on the page. Text inside it does not belong to the main story of the document. Delete a box and the sentence is gone. Type into the body and the box will not move out of the way. Two boxes that look like one paragraph are still two objects.
That is useful for a callout or a label on a diagram. It is the wrong structure for the body of a memo, a contract, or a report. Body text should live in paragraphs so that editing one line reflows the next.
Why converters emit boxes
A PDF stores many lines as “put this string at this coordinate.” The converter’s cheapest reconstruction is: make a box, put the string in it, place the box at that coordinate. Do that for every line and the page matches the PDF in print preview.
The file then behaves like a collage. Selecting a paragraph means shift-clicking a stack of boxes. Changing a heading size leaves a hole. Adding a sentence covers the next box instead of pushing it down. Copying into another document brings a pile of frames with it.
Some conversions go further and put almost all of the text into boxes, with little or nothing in the document body. That file is a photocopy. It has a Word extension and it is not an editable document in the sense this product uses.
How to see the boxes
Click a sentence. If a frame appears around that line or that block, you are in a box. Turn on formatting marks or the selection pane if your editor has one — a long list of text boxes is the giveaway. Select-all and look at the body: if the cursor barely moves because the body is empty, the words you see are not in the body.
A few boxes on a figure are normal. A box on every line of a three-page letter is the failure this search is about.
What “without text boxes” should mean
It does not mean the file will never contain a box. A genuine label on a diagram may still be a box. It means the reading order of the document — headings, paragraphs, lists, and tables — lives in the body, so you can edit it as Word.
If a tool can only keep the layout by boxing every line, it has not produced the file the search asked for. It has produced a drawing that happens to open in Word.

Will the formatting get messed up?
It can. A PDF is a drawing of a page; Word and Excel are structure. Tables, columns, and scans are the usual breaks. A rebuilt spreadsheet can keep line items as rows and still insert empty columns or split a number. Papermeld inspects the output. If a Word file has text only in boxes, or a workbook has no cell values, that output is not treated as finished. You still review the file against the source before you send it.
